Tonight I preferred reading to writing. A book was recently recommended to me, with the highest praise I think a book (and it's author) could ever aspire: "It's my absolute favorite." The recommendation came because of our conversation about one of my own literary pursuits, which is my desire to tell some of the story of Christianity and the preservation of the Bible through the centuries following the New Testament. I call it "The Canon Chronicles," which will undoubtedly be a significant part of my life's work. Our Christian heritage since the days of the early apostles is largely unknown to the masses. But laced within it are stories of faith, virtue, sacrifice, martyrdom, vision, treachery and love that need to be told. Such is my quest - and I dare say it will be a long one.
Because of this came the recommendation to read The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas. Without revealing too much about the story - for I was privileged to begin the book with precious little insight concerning the content of its pages - it is set within the Roman Empire (Rome, Athens, & Israel so far) around 33-34 AD. A rather significant time period, I should say, and the author delivers a marvelous story. It has me captivated and craving to read more. I'm glad my new job doesn't begin for another few days so I can spend more time in the book's pages. I believe that, if it continues on as it has for the first nearly half of the book, that it may soon receive the greatest compliment that I can bestow. And it leaves me yearning for the day when my own books will be subject to the same scrutiny. I hope I can deliver works befitting the highest praise.
